Aristophanes' The Clouds is a hilarious and thought-provoking play that explores the nature of language, education, and the search for truth. First performed in 423 BC, the play follows the story of Strepsiades, an elderly Athenian farmer who is desperate to find a way to avoid paying his debts. He turns to Socrates, a philosopher who teaches a newfangled form of詭辯術 (sophistry),which he believes will allow him to argue his way out of any situation.

Socrates' school, the Thinkery, is a chaotic and absurd place, filled with students who are learning how to argue both sides of any question, and to find loopholes in any argument. Strepsiades is initially impressed by Socrates' teachings, but he soon realizes that they are not what he was looking for. Socrates is not interested in teaching Strepsiades how to be a good citizen or how to live a virtuous life. He is only interested in teaching him how to win arguments.

Strepsiades eventually comes to realize that Socrates' teachings are not only useless, but they are also dangerous. Socrates' students are becoming so skilled at詭辯術 that they are able to twist the truth and justify any action, no matter how immoral. Strepsiades fears that his son, Pheidippides, will be corrupted by Socrates' teachings, and he decides to burn down the Thinkery.
